Warts
GK Dermatology provides treatment of warts in Weymouth MA.
What are warts?
Warts are non-cancerous skin growths caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV causes warts by stimulating the growth of cells on the skin or mucous membranes.
How do you get warts?
The virus can be transmitted through contact with an infected person or surface, like a shower floor. The time from the first contact until warts become noticeable may be several months. Genital warts are usually sexually transmitted. Warts run in families and most experts think that there is a genetic predisposition to HPV in some people.
How do dermatologists treat warts?
Dermatologists and other doctors can use prescription medications, such as imiquimod, and employ stronger medicines in the office (dichloroacetic or trichloroacetic or glycolic acid, cantharidin, bleomycin) than those available over-the-counter. They can also freeze the warts with liquid nitrogen (a procedure called cryotherapy) or remove the wart with electrosurgery (using an electric needle), radiosurgery or a laser. In certain cases, doctors perform immunotherapy which uses the body’s own immune system to destroy warts – the drug interferon can be used to boost the immune system’s ability to reject the wart.
