What are exosomes?

Exosomes are nanoparticles released by nearly all cells in the human body, including skin cells. They contain various lipids, proteins, amino acids, peptides, growth factors, and genetic material. High extraction efficiency in the laboratory is crucial for using exosomes in therapeutic applications. Exosomes are also being used as ingredients in commercialized skin treatment products. When used as an in-office skin-care treatment, exosomes are extracted from human stem cells and frozen to keep them stable.

How does exosome therapy work?

Exosomes communicate and transmit signals between cells, so they can be considered messengers sending signals to unhealthy cells, triggering them to regenerate. Exosome therapy allows new exosomes to swoop in to help wake up inactive skin cells and older exosomes so they can get back to work to repair, strengthen, and rejuvenate skin.

What are the indications for exosome therapy?

Exosome therapy can be effective in skin rejuvenation, skin aging, hair loss, atopic dermatitis, and wounds. Exosomes rejuvenate the skin and combat skin aging by boosting cell proliferation and collagen and elastin synthesis. They can boost hair growth. Also, they enhance the wound-healing process as they induce collagen and vascularization. Therefore, they reduce the healing time when applied to the skin after skin rejuvenation procedures such as ablative laser resurfacing and microneedling.

Description of treatment

An exosome-rich liquid is applied to the skin. The procedure is painless, therefore, performed without local anesthesia. Exosome application to the skin is often performed immediately after skin rejuvenation procedures such as laser resurfacing and microneedling as it enhances healing. The fact that exosomes are frozen when they go on–it’s like putting out a fire that the laser or microneedling created. The skin is instantly soothed, and redness and burning, and the healing process are cut down by half.

How many treatments are required?

For optimal results, 2-4 treatments are required.

Are there side effects or contraindications?

Exosome therapy is well-tolerated. The exosome solution applied to the skin is painless and non-irritating. Exosomes have extremely low immunogenicity and fuse well with recipient cells. As a result, the risk of reactions caused by exosomes is negligible. There are no contraindications to exosome therapy.

Expectations

You will see improvements within two to six weeks following the treatment. A week and a half after exosome therapy, one will notice their cheeks glow more and are glassier than usual. Some patients stop using foundation because their complexion looks so even and luminous. When exosome therapy is used for hair loss, increased hair density and strength are expected to be noticed 2-3 months after treatment.
