Molluscum Contagiosum
GK Dermatology provides treatment of molluscum in Weymouth MA (South Shore MA).
What Causes Molluscum?
Molluscum is a common viral infection. It manifests as minute, skin-colored or pearly white raised pimples. The lesions may become irritated, painful and surrounded by redness and flakiness. They are found alone or in groups on the face, trunk, lower abdomen, pubic area, genitalia and inner thighs. Molluscum spreads by direct skin contact and through contaminated objects such as bath sponges and towels. Outbreaks have been often reported in children who swim frequently in public pools. In adults molluscum is likely to be transmitted through sexual contact, and as many as 30% of adults with genital molluscum may have concurrent sexually transmitted diseases.
How Do Dermatologists Treat Molluscum?
Treatment helps to minimize spread of the lesions and transmission to others. Molluscum usually responds to local therapy in the doctor’s office with liquid nitrogen (freezing), curettage or gentle electrodessication, trichloroacetic acid 25 to 50% solution or cantharidin 0.7% solution. Home treatments may also be recommended by your dermatologist, and are more efficacious if combined with office treatments.
