What Is Impetigo?

Impetigo is a common and contagious bacterial skin infection on the surface of the skin. Although it often affects children, it can be found in all age groups. It usually shows as a patch of itchy, crusted skin that has a yellow or honey color. The infection can be spread from person to person through touch. The bacteria can enter the skin through an injury such as a cut or abrasion, resulting in an infection. More severe cases can show blistering and a large number of spots.

Evaluating Impetigo

Your dermatologist may need to take a sample of the infected area by swabbing with a Q-tip. That sample is then sent for a culture. The test will confirm the specific type of bacteria that is causing the condition.

Treatment of Impetigo

Impetigo is curable with the appropriate treatment. Treatment includes topical medicines. However, oral medicines are required for more widespread infections. If you see any signs of a potential infection, please consult your dermatologist as soon as possible. It is best to identify and treat Impetigo early on.
