Blue Light (Photodynamic) Therapy
GK Dermatology offers Photodynamic therapy in Weymouth MA. We serve South Shore MA and Greater Boston.
What is Photodynamic Therapy?
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a non‐invasive special treatment performed with a topical photo‐sensitizing agent called aminolevulinic acid (Levulan, Dusa Pharmaceuticals). Levulan solution is applied to the skin and then activated by a specific wavelength of light (blue light). The purpose of activating the Levulan is to reduce pre‐cancerous skin lesions called Actinic Keratoses. PDT has been FDA-approved for the treatment of actinic keratoses but is also used for photorejuvenation as well as treatment of acne, psoriasis, lichen planus, and hidradenitis suppurativa.
About Photodynamic Therapy in Weymouth MA
The Procedure:
Levulan (20% 5-aminolevulinic acid) solution is applied in the office for 1 hour on the affected areas, typically face and/or scalp. The solution is then rinsed off and the affected areas patted dry. The patient is then placed under blue light for approximately 17 minutes. Light scaling and peeling as well as mild to moderate redness are expected to occur for 2 to 7 days after PDT treatment.
Before Blue Light Treatment:
It is recommended to protect the treated skin from the sun for a full 4 weeks prior to PDT. This is best accomplished by the daily use of SPF 30 sunscreen and a hat worn during times of greater exposure to the sun’s rays. Wash your face well just prior to your appointment to remove any make-ups or creams.
After Blue Light Treatment:
Sun protection including SPF 30 sunscreen with titanium and/or zinc, and a hat, are mandatory for at least 48 hours after each treatment. Reapply frequently. Avoid direct sunlight to the face, even for a minute, as well as other forms of bright light such as household lights. Wear sun protection as above even when sitting near a window or in a car. After the first 48 hours, you may use your usual SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. Scrubs and facials must be avoided for 1 week after the procedure. Retin-A and glycolic acid products may be restarted after 5 days only if the skin is no longer red, swollen or peeling. Any areas of crusting or oozing should be covered at least 3 times per day with Aquaphor ointment.
